App Development for Startups
For Non-Technical Founders, From MVP to Custom Platform
Canadian-based. Serving North America.
New Idea Machine builds Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) and custom software for founders who aren't technical.
We help you make the big technical decisions before you commit money to development: what to build first, what to skip, and what it should cost.
You own every line of code from day one, and you can check our thinking against our free tools before you ever talk to us.
You don't fail because your idea is bad.
Most founders don't fail because their ideas are bad. They fail because of early technical decisions that compound over time.
Choosing the wrong build path. Hiring the wrong developer. Skipping proper validation.
These costs show up later.
The software industry is often expensive, slow, and difficult to navigate. Without a better way to make decisions upfront, even a strong idea can stall before it ever launches.
New Idea Machine was built to change that.
We help you make clear, informed technical decisions before you commit to development. That's how your software becomes a business engine, not the thing that quietly drains your time, money, and momentum. If you're building an MVP app, or custom platform, start with clarity.
Launch with clarity. Scale with confidence.
Move faster without guessing. Our process helps you make the right technical decisions early, so you avoid rework, control costs, and capture value sooner.
We start with clarity, not contracts. We've built free tools that walk you through the decisions you'll need to make: what to build, who to hire, and what it should cost. This is how your project stays efficient, focused, and within budget from day one.
Before you commit, use our practical resources to avoid costly mistakes and keep your budget on track:
- The 14 Questions to Hire the Right Developer: what you need to ask before starting.
- The App Cost Calculator: get a clear picture of your potential spend.
A real budget instead of a six-figure quote
"That lowered the risk. It allowed us to get started tomorrow. We didn't have to commit to a 12-month contract, all those big things that really scared us off from working with other teams."
Shannon Phillips, founder of Unbounded Thinking, was just starting out and needed a dev agency. He was quoted six figures and 12-month contracts. He met us at a networking event where we asked what his monthly budget actually was. We built a plan around that number and automated his entire system. Today, his company is global.
Ask us what your budget can buildYou see working software every two weeks, not a surprise at the end
We work in short cycles with regular meetings where we show you what we've built. You see progress every week or two, not months later. You catch things early when adjustments are quick, there are no surprises at the end, and the product evolves based on your input throughout. If your priorities shift, we adjust the roadmap and keep moving, without change-order fees.
The three things you're probably worried about
You own the code. From day one.
Not at final payment. If you ever want to leave, you take everything with you, fully documented.
You pay for time and materials, planned around your actual budget.
No inflated fixed bids, no hidden fees. You see detailed time logs with every invoice, and unused retainer funds come back to you.
We'll talk you out of features.
Most developers are order-takers. We act as strategic advisors and help you focus on the must-haves that get you to revenue, even when that means less work for us.
Questions startup founders ask us
Do I need a technical cofounder before I start?
No. Most of our clients don't have one. What you need is someone technical in your corner who isn't selling you development hours by default. That can be a development partner who tells you what not to build, or a fractional CTO for a few hours a month.
How long does a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) take to build?
Typically two to four months, depending on scope. AI-assisted development shortens timelines by 50 to 75 percent compared to traditional teams, and building must-haves first means you launch and start learning sooner.
What if I'm not sure my idea is worth building yet?
Then don't build yet, and don't let anyone talk you into it. Validate first: a prototype, a $100-a-month off-the-shelf tool, or our weekend bootcamp where you build a working prototype yourself. We've talked founders out of five-figure builds because validation had to come first. It's cheaper to find out early.

Which of these sounds like you?

You may not be ready for development yet and you're probably wondering how much your digital product is really going to cost.
We built the App Cost Calculator to give you clarity. These are the same questions we ask clients to provide them with an estimate. Simply answer a few non-technical questions about your project and our custom AI tool gives you:
- A realistic estimate with no inflated numbers, so you know what's fair
- A detailed document telling developers exactly what to build, no lost translation
- A map of how real people will use your app, no wasted time or money
